At current 10% unemployment, there’s more unemployed software engineers than there are employed engineers in any other category view full post
In the USA, there are:
| Count | Discipline |
|---|---|
| 370,000 | civil engineers |
| 370,000 | industrial engineers |
| 300,000 | mechanical engineers |
| 200,000 | electrical engineers |
| 77,000 | computer engineers |
| 68,000 | aerospace engineers |
| 23,000 | biomedical engineers |
| 23,000 | physicists/astronomers |
| 21,000 | chemical engineers |
| 2,000 | mathematicians |
There’s ~2-5 million software engineers in the USA (depending on how you count data science (math), etc. See for yourself!)
This means there are more software engineers than all other math/physics/engineering disciplines combined, and up to >10x the next highest engineering discipline.
At current 10% unemployment in software jobs, there’s possibly more unemployed s/w engs than there are engs in any other discipline.
